A Giant Cargo Plane for a Giant Project

The Boeing 747-400LCF Dream Lifter is a modified version of the Boeing 747-400 passenger jet that is used to transport large components of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. The Dream Lifter is one of the largest cargo planes in the world, with a cargo volume of 65,000 cubic feet (1,840 cubic meters) and a maximum payload of 250,000 pounds (113,400 kilograms).

The Dream Lifter was created to meet the logistical challenge of transporting the large sections of the 787 Dreamliner from different manufacturing sites around the world to the final assembly plant in Everett, Washington. The 787 Dreamliner is made of composite materials that require special tools and equipment to produce and assemble. These tools and equipment are too large and heavy to fit in conventional cargo planes or trucks.

The Dream Lifter is based on the Boeing 747-400, but with several modifications to accommodate the oversized cargo. The most noticeable change is the enlarged fuselage, which is 18 feet (5.5 meters) longer and 12 feet (3.7 meters) wider than the original 747-400. The fuselage has a hinged tail section that swings open to load and unload the cargo. The cockpit was also moved forward and downward to make room for the cargo bay.

The Dream Lifter can carry up to three sections of the 787 Dreamliner at a time, such as the wings, fuselage or tail. The cargo bay is pressurized and temperature-controlled to protect the sensitive composite materials from damage. The Dream Lifter can fly at a cruising speed of Mach 0.82 (550 miles per hour or 885 kilometers per hour) and has a range of 4,200 nautical miles (7,800 kilometers) with a full load.

The Dream Lifter was first flown in 2006 and entered service in 2007. Boeing operates four Dream Lifters to transport the 787 Dreamliner components from Japan, Italy and other countries to the United States. The Dream Lifter has reduced the transportation time and cost of the 787 Dreamliner project significantly, as well as enabled Boeing to use a global network of suppliers and partners.
