Air France is one of the leading airlines in Europe and the world, with a fleet of 209 aircraft, mostly from Airbus. The airline operates a mix of narrow-body and wide-body aircraft for its short-haul and long-haul operations, respectively. However, Air France is also undergoing a major fleet modernization strategy, aiming to replace its older and less efficient models with newer and more environmentally-friendly ones.

One of the key elements of this strategy is the introduction of the Airbus A370, a new wide-body aircraft that is expected to join Air France's fleet in 2025. The Airbus A370 is a proposed variant of the Airbus A350, which Air France already operates 20 of, with 21 more on order. The A370 would be a larger and longer-range version of the A350, capable of carrying up to 400 passengers and flying up to 9,000 nautical miles.

The Airbus A370 would be an ideal replacement for Air France's Boeing 777-200ER and Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, which are currently the backbone of its long-haul fleet. The Boeing 777s are aging and consume more fuel than the newer Airbus models. Air France plans to retire its Boeing 777-200ERs by 2025 and its Boeing 777-300ERs by 2030, and replace them with Airbus A350-900s and Airbus A370s.

The Airbus A370 would also offer several advantages over the Boeing 777X, which is Boeing's rival product to the A350 and A370. The Boeing 777X has faced several delays and technical issues, and has not yet entered service with any airline. The Airbus A370, on the other hand, would benefit from the proven technology and reliability of the Airbus A350 platform, which has been in service since 2015 and has received positive feedback from airlines and passengers alike.

The Airbus A370 would also align with Air France's commitment to reducing its environmental impact and carbon footprint. The Airbus A370 would be powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines, which are among the most efficient and quiet engines in the market. The Airbus A370 would also feature a carbon-fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) fuselage and wings, which are lighter and more durable than conventional materials. These features would enable the Airbus A370 to reduce its fuel consumption by up to 25% compared to previous-generation aircraft, and lower its CO2 emissions and noise levels accordingly.

The Airbus A370 would also enhance Air France's passenger experience and comfort, with a spacious and modern cabin design. The Airbus A370 would have a standard configuration of 400 seats, with 40 in Business class, 30 in Premium Economy class, and 330 in Economy class. The Business class seats would be lie-flat beds with direct aisle access, while the Premium Economy and Economy class seats would have more legroom and recline than average. The Airbus A370 would also feature larger windows, mood lighting, lower cabin altitude, higher humidity, and improved air quality, all of which would reduce fatigue and jet lag for passengers.

The Airbus A370 is still in the conceptual stage, and has not yet been officially launched by Airbus or ordered by any airline. However, Air France has expressed interest in the aircraft, and has reportedly held talks with Airbus about its specifications and requirements. Air France hopes to be among the first customers of the Airbus A370, and to receive its first delivery in 2025.
